Chapter Fourteen – Kieran

Was she avoiding him? He couldn’t tell, but she was stronger than him, she could fight the mating bond that threatened to overwhelm him. When he had run as a lion, it hadn’t been too bad, his whole consciousness had been taken up with trying to coordinate all the parts of his body that seemed alien to him. Running on four feet was one thing, but the tail, that was totally weird, like having a fifth leg. If he wasn’t careful, it overbalanced him, and the last thing he wanted to do was fall flat on the floor in front of her.

It didn’t help that she was obviously so experienced at running as her horse; it was all so natural. She was the most graceful thing he’d ever seen. The way the sun caught her mane, made it look as if it was made of silver thread, and it flew out behind as she galloped. He had never appreciated just how beautiful a horse could be.

As a lion he felt like a child again, all gangly legs and big feet. But as a man, he felt a primal urge to mate with her. All he could think of, was how he wanted to be with her, to make her his. All the women in his past, and there had been many, were nothing to him now. He was with Misty; the rest had faded, slipped from his mind. To Kieran, this was an enlightening moment: he had always been a man whore, but no more, there would be no one else in his life but her.

She was collecting wood, and he went to help her, trying not to think that she might not want him. Instead, he tried to concentrate on the practicalities of the situation. She was right, they needed a fire, especially since he had stopped running, his body had become chilled, and he needed food. He had not eaten since well before he went into the cage to fight and that was hours ago. No, a lifetime ago.

Where were they going to get food from out here in the wilderness? He was about to find out his mate was very resourceful.

“There are nuts on these trees, help me collect them.” She reached up, picking the nuts off the trees and putting them in a pouch she made out of her T-shirt. “There are sweet chestnuts too, and some other nuts over there. I think I saw some blackberries a little bit further down the hill, so if we collect those … well, we might not like it, but we won’t starve.”

“I never expected you to turn me to a vegetarian quite so quickly.” That made her smile, and it warmed him more than a fire ever would. “So, how do you know all this?” he asked.

“My father was into all this foraging stuff.” She went quiet, standing still, and he could tell she was thinking of her past, of her family. A family whom she had not seen for nearly two years.
